Maine Men’s Halfway Houses and Sober Living Environments

For men seeking transitional living facilities in order to complete their recovery program and return to a more traditional lifestyle, Maine has an excellent choice in halfway houses, transitional homes, and sober living environments. Granite House can help.

What is a Men’s halfway house?

Men’s halfway houses, or transitional living facilities, are gender specific, sober living environments dedicated to helping men in the early stages of recovery. Most residents have recently completed a treatment program at an inpatient facility. Rather than risking re-entering mainstream society and facing old problems with little assistance, halfway houses provide structure and support in order to reinforce the treatment received at the short- or long-term facility.  Most transitional living houses are centered on the 12 Step guidelines of Alcoholics Anonymous, emphasize accountability and personal responsibility, and have a rigidly structured environment.

Benefits of being in a sober living environment

Residing in a sober living home works because it helps clients through what may be a difficult time. Instead returning directly to an old lifestyle after having been in a drug or alcohol treatment program, those in recovery have an opportunity to gradually resume mainstream life. A transitional living facility helps this by

  • Stressing personal accountability and self-discipline
  • Requiring attendance at peer group support  meetings where they receive guidance and assistance in the struggle to achieve and maintain sobriety
  • Providing a structured environment for coping with problems that arise during recovery

The highly structured environment emphasizes personal responsibility, accountability, and self-discipline in all aspects of residential life. Residents must attend 12 Step meetings, participate in the daily upkeep and maintenance of the house, hold jobs (or be actively seeking employment), and meet their financial obligations. Residents may be enrolled in an accredited academic institution if they need to complete their education. Young adult men who are still in the early stages of developing their adult identity, or those who have had continuing struggles with addiction seem to reap the greatest benefits.

Things to expect when living in a halfway house

Expect a no-nonsense approach in a sober living home or halfway house. The managers have responsibilities to all of their residents, cannot not tolerate those who choose to violate the rules and regulations of the facility. The residents must also expect to take personal responsibility for all of their actions, and that it is not a vacation home away from the demands placed upon them during their inpatient programs.  Because support services are offered, residents are required to participate or risk dismissal.  While the facilities may have pleasant amenities and surroundings, the rules are inflexible and the demands and expectations are high.
