Massachusetts Men’s Halfway Houses and Sober Living Environments

For those who would believe the services offered by a sober living facility will help them complete their recovery from drug or alcohol addiction, Granite House is available to residents of Massachusetts.

What is a Men’s halfway house?

Halfway houses, or transitional living facilities, are sober living environments dedicated to helping those who recently completed a treatment program at an inpatient facility, but still need structure and support in order to reinforce the principles recently learned.  Traditionally centered on the 12 Step guidelines of Alcoholics Anonymous, they emphasize accountability and personal responsibility and have a rigidly structured environment.

Benefits of being in a sober living environment

The key benefit to residing in a sober living home is that it helps its clients through what may be a difficult time. Instead of leaving an inpatient program and returning directly to an old lifestyle, those in recovery have an opportunity to gradually re-acclimate themselves to mainstream life. A transitional living facility helps this by

  • insisting on personal accountability and self-discipline
  • providing a structured environment for processing issues associated with recovery
  • Offering peer group support  supplying guidance and assistance in the struggle to achieve and maintain sobriety

Because of their highly structured environment, most sober living homes require regular attendance at group and individual counseling sessions and 12 Step meetings. Discipline is developed and reinforced by requiring all residents to participate in the daily upkeep and functioning of the house. In addition, all residents are required to hold jobs or be actively seeking employment, or be enrolled in an academic institution. The greatest benefits seem to be realized by young adult men who are still in the early stages of developing their adult identity, and by those who have had continuing struggles with addiction.

Things to expect when living in a halfway house

The no-nonsense approach in a sober living house must be expected. The managers have responsibilities to all of their residents and they will not tolerate those who fail to adhere to the home’s standards. In addition, residents must also accept that a sober living house expects its residents to take personal responsibility for all of their actions, and that they will be required to continue with their aftercare program and attend all individual and group counseling sessions and 12 meetings. Residents will also be required to contribute to the care and upkeep of the facility.
