New Hampshire Men’s Halfway Houses and Sober Living Environments

New Hampshire is home to some of the most respected halfway houses and sober living facilities in New England. Each one is dedicated helping others complete their recovery from drug or alcohol addiction.

What is a Men’s halfway house?

Halfway houses, or transitional living facilities, are sober living environments dedicated to helping those in the early stages of recovery who have recently completed a treatment program at an inpatient facility. Rather than an individual re-entering mainstream society and face old problems with little assistance, halfway houses provide structure and support in order to reinforce the principles recently learned.  Traditionally centered on the 12 Step guidelines of Alcoholics Anonymous, they emphasize accountability and personal responsibility and have a rigidly structured environment.

Benefits of being in a sober living environment

Residents in a sober living home find help with the transition from short- or long-term inpatient drug and alcohol treatment to living a sober life in mainstream society. Instead returning directly to an old lifestyle, those in recovery have an opportunity to gradually re-acclimate themselves to mainstream life. A transitional living facility helps this by insisting on personal accountability, self-discipline, providing a structured environment to help cope with concerns that arise during recovery, and offering peer support groups. Young adult males and those who have had long battles with addiction seem to receive the greatest benefit from the services of sober living environments.

Things to expect when living in a halfway house

Most sober living homes require regular attendance at group and individual counseling sessions and 12 Step meetings. Developing and reinforcing discipline is accomplished by requiring all residents to participate in the daily upkeep and functioning of the house.  Additionally, all residents are required to hold jobs or be actively seeking employment. Clients may be enrolled full time in academic programs in lieu of employment.  If the rules of the house or home are not followed or are violated, dismissal from the facility is the standard consequence.
