New Jersey Men’s Halfway Houses and Sober Living Environments

There are sober living facilities and halfway houses available for residents of  New Jersey especially for those who would like to reside in a transitional living facility in order to complete their recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. Granite House can help.

What is a Men’s halfway house?

Halfway houses are transitional facilities structured as sober living environments. They are focused on helping those who need additional structure and support to reinforce the principles recently learned during a short- or long-term inpatient treatment program. These environments stress personal responsibility and accountability and are highly structured in their approach. The 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous is usually the governing philosophy.

Benefits of being in a sober living environment

Because of their highly structured environment, most sober living homes require regular attendance at 12 Step meetings as well as group and individual counseling sessions. These requirements provide excellent support for those transitioning from a inpatient program. Within the framework of the home itself, chores are required to maintain the house, and residents are expected to be either gainfully employed or enrolled in classes at a nearby educational facility. Young adult men who are still in the early stages of developing their adult identity, and those who have had continuing struggles with addiction seem to benefit the most from the sober living environment.

Things to accept when living in a halfway house

The no-nonsense approach in a sober living house must be clearly understood. The managers have responsibilities to all of their residents and they will not tolerate those who fail to adhere to the stated standards. The residents must also accept that a sober living house expects its residents to take personal responsibility for all of their actions, and that it is not a vacation home away from the demands placed upon them during their inpatient programs.  Although support services are offered, residents are required to participate or risk dismissal.  While the facilities may have pleasant amenities and surroundings, the rules are inflexible and the demands and expectations are high.
